VA vs VB WRX: What Parts Carry Over

SubiShop.com |

If you are moving from a 2015–2021 WRX (VA) to a 2022+ WRX (VB), or shopping used parts, the first question is usually: will my old parts fit? The honest answer is that some do, a lot don't, and you should never assume. This guide covers what we can actually confirm from manufacturer fitment listings, and where you need to check before you buy.

What changed between the VA and the VB

The VB is a new car, not a facelift. It moved from the 2.0-liter FA20DIT to the 2.4-liter FA24DIT, and it rides on a newer platform with different bodywork. There is also no VB STI. The STI ended with the 2021 model year, so any "STI" part for a 2015–2021 car is a VA part.

That means anything bolted to the engine, the turbo or the intake tract should be treated as generation-specific until the manufacturer says otherwise. In our catalog, intakes, turbo inlets, intercoolers, J-pipes and most cat-backs are listed separately for the VA and VB. The GrimmSpeed TMIC for the VA and the GrimmSpeed billet TMIC for the VB are two different parts, for example, and so are Invidia's VA and VB cat-backs.

Shifter parts that carry over (manual cars)

This is the area with the most confirmed carryover. For the 6-speed manual WRX, several manufacturers list a single part for both generations:

PERRIN's shifter stops are split by year and by which shifter you run (factory, STI short shifter or PERRIN short shifter), so pick the one that matches your setup. Note that VA STI owners have a different gearbox, so these WRX shifter parts are not STI parts even when a listing's tags suggest otherwise. Go by the fitment list on the product page.

Drivetrain and chassis parts that carry over

Sway bars are the big exception on the chassis side. Whiteline and PERRIN list separate bars for each generation, such as the Whiteline 24 mm front bar for the VB and the PERRIN rear bar for the VB. Strut braces are split by generation too. Browse the full range in WRX suspension.

Exhaust: one notable crossover

Most exhaust parts are generation-specific, but the PERRIN dual-exit axle-back is listed by PERRIN for both the 2015–2026 WRX and the 2015–2021 STI. Invidia, on the other hand, lists separate VA and VB systems. Anything ahead of the axle-back, like J-pipes and downpipes, is tied to the engine and turbo and should be treated as generation-specific. See WRX exhaust and filter by your year.

Brakes and lighting

Brakes depend on the exact brake package, not just the generation. A couple of examples from our catalog:

  • DBA T2 and DBA 4000 T3 rear rotors are listed for the 2015–2021 WRX CVT with EyeSight and the 2022+ WRX with electronic parking brake. If your car has a manual parking brake, look for the rotor listed for that setup instead.
  • Hawk lists its HPS 5.0 front pads for the 2018–2021 STI six-piston Brembo as also fitting 2024–2025 WRX TR/tS cars with compatible Brembo calipers, and asks you to verify fitment.

Some Diode Dynamics lighting, including the SSC2 ditch light kits and several interior LED bulb kits, is listed for 2015+ or 2015–2023 WRX. Shop pads, rotors and big brake kits in WRX brakes.

Watch out for "2015–2022" listings

A few listings, including some COBB shifter and drivetrain parts, say 2015–2022 WRX. Since 2022 was the first VB model year, confirm with the manufacturer whether a 2022 fitment means VB before you order for a 2022+ car. When in doubt, contact us with your year, transmission and trim.

How to check fitment yourself

When a part is not on this list, it does not automatically mean it won't fit. It means we can't confirm it from the manufacturer's listing. Here is how to check:

  • Read the Fits list on the product page. It shows the years, models and transmission notes the part is listed for.
  • Look at the part number. If the manufacturer sells one part number for both generations, that is your answer. If there are two part numbers, they are different parts.
  • Check transmission and options. Manual vs CVT, EyeSight, and electronic vs manual parking brake all change fitment on some parts.
  • Ask us. Send your year, trim and transmission and we will check with the manufacturer.

The short version

Manual shifter parts, some clutch, subframe and caster parts, wheel spacers and hood struts are confirmed to carry over. Engine, intake, turbo, intercooler, most exhaust and sway bar parts do not. For everything else, check the fitment list on the product page. Start from 2015–2021 WRX parts or 2022+ WRX parts, or browse the whole WRX performance parts range. New to modding?
