Where to start
Most WRX builds go in the same order, and it starts with the tune. A COBB Accessport is the base of nearly every build here. It lets you log the ECU before you change anything, and it is what lets the car run an intake, J-pipe or downpipe safely.
Stage 1 is a map for an otherwise stock car, often with a cat-back for sound. Stage 2 maps are written for a less restrictive downpipe (called a J-pipe on 2015+ WRX models), usually with an intake. Past that you are into intercooler, fuel and turbo changes and a custom tune.
The chassis side does not need a tune. A rear sway bar, end links, a stiffer pitch stop mount and solid shifter bushings are cheap, and most owners feel them the first day. For brakes, start with pads and fresh fluid before you look at a big brake kit.
What fits what
- 2002–2007 (GD): 2002–2005 WRX has the 2.0L EJ205, 2006–2007 WRX the 2.5L EJ255. The 2004–2007 STI has the EJ257 and a 6-speed.
- 2008–2014 (GR/GV): WRX runs the EJ255 with a 5-speed, STI the EJ257 with a 6-speed. The 2011 WRX got the wider STI body, so some body and suspension parts split at 2010/2011.
- 2015–2021 (VA): the WRX moved to the 2.0L direct-injected FA20, while the STI kept the EJ257. They share a body but very few engine parts.
- 2022+ (VB): 2.4L FA24 and a new chassis. Treat it as its own car; most VA parts do not fit.

WRX parts questions
Do I need a tune after an intake?
On a turbo WRX or STI, plan on it. Most intakes change the size of the MAF housing or the tube around it, and the stock ECU will read airflow wrong without a map made for that intake. That shows up as rough idle, stalling or lean spots. A drop-in panel filter in the stock airbox does not need a tune. Some intakes are sold as part of a power package with the map included.
Do I need a tune for a downpipe, J-pipe or cat-back?
Downpipe or J-pipe: yes, every time. It lets the turbo spool faster and make more boost, and it will set a check engine light on the stock map. A tune is also what keeps boost under control. Catless versions are for off-road use and will not pass an emissions test. Cat-back and axle-back exhausts sit after the catalytic converters, so the car runs fine on the stock map.
Do 2015–2021 parts fit a 2022+ WRX?
Mostly no. The 2022+ VB has a different engine (2.4L FA24 instead of the 2.0L FA20), a different chassis and a different exhaust routing. Intakes, J-pipes, cat-backs, intercoolers and suspension parts are all generation-specific. A few shifter and interior pieces carry over. Each listing names the exact years it fits, so go by that.
Do WRX parts fit an STI of the same year?
Body, interior and a lot of suspension parts are shared within a generation. Engine parts are a different story. From 2015 to 2021 the WRX ran the FA20 and the STI kept the EJ257, so almost nothing under the hood crosses over. On 2008–2014 cars many EJ gaskets, spacers and engine bay parts are shared, but turbo, intercooler and exhaust parts often are not.
Can I return a part that doesn't fit?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery if it is new, unused and in its original packaging. Contact us first for a return number (RMA). Returns carry a 25% restocking fee and you pay return shipping, and installed parts can't be returned, so check the fitment line on the listing before you bolt anything on. Not sure? Ask us before you order.
